Feel More in Control and Prepared for the New Year: How to Complete Your Year-End Review

Writer's picture: Steve HormanSteve Horman

Whether you’re finishing the year, backwards, upside down and on fire or smoothly rolling into the year's end, it's that special time of the year where we all can slow down and reflect. If the past year flew by so quickly that you hardly remember what you did, don't worry, you are not alone. But now it's time to take stock of our lives and make plans for the future. One of the best ways to do this is by conducting a year-end review, where you reflect on your past year's accomplishments, challenges, and goals. In this article, we'll explore everything you need to know to about how to conduct your year-end review successfully as well as help you feel more in control and prepared for the new year.

Understanding the Value of a Year-End Review:

At Planful, we believe in the "Dream it. Plan it. Do it." philosophy. A year-end review helps you align with this motto and enables you to DREAM by envisioning your ideal future, PLAN by setting achievable goals, and DO by taking measurable steps towards them. Reviewing your year's achievements allows you to celebrate successes and identify the areas that require improvement. It also gives you clarity on what to carry forward into the new year.

Everyone needs calm moments to think and recharge. Every minute you spend doing it correctly has the potential to 2-10X your performance because you are working towards something rather than just staying busy. Reviewing ensures you are still on track, which is critical for top performers.

Preparing for Your Year-End Review:

Before just diving into your review, set aside dedicated time and materials. Create a comfortable and distraction-free environment for reflection. Some people prefer seclusion and silence, while others prefer the buzz of a cafe's background. Decide on what works for you and go there. Gather materials like a notepad or computer, your calendar, and anything that will help you review your year effectively. Once you have everything required, you can begin.

Step 1: Reviewing Your Achievements and Challenges:

Start by deeply reflecting on the significant milestones, remarkable achievements, and formidable challenges that have shaped your journey throughout the past year. Celebrate the obvious triumphs, such as securing your dream job or getting married, but also recognize the subtle victories, like honing and expanding your skill sets or showing up for your family day in and day out. Capture these achievements, both grand and minuscule, and immerse yourself in the emotions they evoke. Equally crucial is to engage in introspection of the obstacles you encountered along the way—to pinpoint the pain points and gain insights into how you triumphed over them.

If you started the year with resolutions or goals, examine that list. Review your goals and determine how far you've come and what worked and what didn't. Now isn't the time to beat yourself down or embellish your victories. It's about acknowledging your strengths and weaknesses so that you can create a plan for continued growth in the next step.

Step 2: Learning from the Past Year:

Reflecting on the past year, it's crucial to identify and understand the key lessons learned and insights gained throughout the year. Hopefully you've been diligently jotting these down, however, if not, now is the perfect opportunity to start, plus, you've just created a list you can work from.

Take a moment to celebrate your victories and truly grasp what contributed to your success. Equally important is acknowledging missed opportunities. This is the time for introspection and self-reflection, without judgment. Take a step back and objectively assess what you could have done differently. What strategies or actions could have led to better or even better outcomes? Write down these valuable insights.

These lessons and insights serve as a foundation for the upcoming year's planning. By transferring and implementing them into your future endeavors, you'll ensure a more effective and successful year ahead.

Step 3: Choosing a Theme for the Year

Choosing a phrase to define your year is an essential part of setting up a mental framework for the coming months. This phrase should encapsulate the essence of your aspirations, hopes, and the primary energy you wish to channel into your efforts. While selecting this phrase, factor in the lessons you've learned from the past year, your future goals, and the changes you want to bring about in your life. The phrase should be motivational, positive, and resonates well with your personal and professional objectives. It's designed to serve as a compass directing your actions and decisions throughout the year. By categorizing the next year under this phrase, you anchor your aspirations and actions, providing a sturdy reference point that guides your decisions, behaviors, and actions.

If you can't decide on one, don't worry. Over the next few weeks think about it and you will eventually find a phrase that encapsulates your motivations and desires for 2024. Here are just a few examples from the Planful community from prior years:

• Be All In

• Be A Boss

• Organize Yourselves

• Fun '21

• Go the Distance

• Be Intentional

• Mindful Momentum

• I Can Do Hard Things

Step 4: Setting New Goals

Now that you have a theme picked out (or the plan for how to decide one), reviewed and assessed the past year, it's time to set your sights on the future. But first, it's time to say something that will ruffle some feathers. I can't in good conscience say that New Year's resolutions work and that you should do them. By February 80% of people have failed their resolution. That's why gym memberships spike every year in January and then normalize to where they were previously. People don't stick with New Year's Resolutions, and here at Planful, we only give strategies that work. So Don't Do Them! Instead of making it to February and giving up like everyone else, try our strategy that is tried and true.

Instead of setting goals that statistically have a low chance of being achieved, Still set goals, but challenge yourself to accomplish them within a 90-day timeframe. By setting big, audacious goals, you push yourself to reach new heights. To effectively do this, narrow down your focus to 3-5 critical goals that align with your personal values and long-term vision. When creating objectives, ensure they follow the SMART criteria, which provides them with structure and feasibility. This approach allows for more detailed planning and increased motivation to achieve your desired outcomes and gets them done in 75% less time. Plus, you will be inspired to work harder due to the condensed timeline.

I can hear the naysayers already complaining about how it can't be done, and I feel sorry for them. They probably didn't have the same 3rd grade teacher I did that repeated this quote to us every single day and had it on a poster taped above the chalkboard at the front of the room:

"Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right." -Henry Ford.

Don't let self-limiting beliefs hold you back! There are enough people saying negative things, don't become one too, especially about yourself. You should be your biggest fan! Instead of saying it can't be done, find a way to plan for the success you crave and desire.

Step 5: Planning for Success in the New Year:

Our motto here is "Dream it. Plan it. Do it." We believe that while dreaming and goal setting are important, they alone are not enough to reach the finish line. To truly move forward and achieve success, you need to act. This means creating a detailed activity plan that outlines concrete action steps required to bring your goals to fruition. Additionally, it is crucial to establish effective organizational systems that will support and facilitate your journey towards success. By combining strategic planning, proactive action, and efficient systems, you can maximize your chances of accomplishing your goals and realizing your dreams. So, embrace the power of action and build a solid foundation for your success!

Additionally, to help you with this, we've created a kit that helps people like you discover their passions, dreams, and ambitions, and turn them into tangible results. This kit is a step-by-step guide, for goal setting and action planning, as well as tips and tricks to stay motivated throughout the process. We've removed the guesswork around how to go from pie in the sky to results, we show you how to forge your own path and will guide you each step of the way.
